was introduced into Tainan in 1865 with the arrival of a British
Missionary physician. Dr. James Laid law Maxwell. Dr. Maxwell
devoted his life to helping the Taiwanese people. He not only
treated patients and spread the gospel, but also managed to teach
the people medicine, world history, world geography, and astronomy.
Through his life, he contributed to the well-being of the Taiwanese
people and gave them renewed hope for progress and prosperity of
Tainan.
In 1860, many more missionaries
were sent by the English church to Taiwan. These individual
missionaries were distinguished physicians, scholars, scientists,
and ministers. One of their first projects was to establish a
hospital, the Shin Law(·s¼Ó)Hospital, the first Western hospital
in Taiwan. In this hospital, they treated patients, and at the same
time introduced Western culture, scientific knowledge, and the
Bible. In 1870, these missionaries began to set up primary schools
in many churches. Then on March 15, 1883, They decided to establish
a Christian Boys' School. Two years later, they succeeded in
founding a Presbyterian middle School in Tainan, with Mr. George Ede
as the first principal. The School became the first Western Boys'
school in Tainan in 1885. However, its supreme goal is to accomplish
the "Chang Jung Educational Institution", including kindergarten,
primary school, junior and senior high school, university and
graduate school. |
